The Blaenafon Cheddar Company

The Blaenafon Cheddar Company is a family business based in a shop on Broad Street in the Welsh industrial town of Blaenavon – a World Heritage Site. The labels on the cheeses depict scenes from the town’s industrial past, but their connections with the town’s rich history run deeper than that: Pwll Mawr Cheddar is matured 300ft below ground at the bottom of a mine shaft at Big Pit mining museum. This Cheddar has won the bronze medal at the prestigious British Cheese Awards.

Blaenafon Cheddar Company currently produces several other very distinctive Cheddars and a hard goat’s cheese, and is known for flavouring certain cheeses with locally made alcoholic drinks, from whisky to cider. Blaenafon Cheddar, for instance, is flavoured with Welsh whisky and ginger preserve to give a delightful blend of sweetness and warmth, while Pwll Ddu (Black Pool) is flavoured with mustard, leeks and The Reverend James Welsh ale for an intense savoury bite.
